Nature Reverence aspires to bring together everyone with a reverent naturalistic standpoint, whatever label they call themselves  – people who celebrate life on this earth, who feel a deep attachment to and active concern for Nature and awe and wonder at the Universe, and who respect human rights, science, logic and evidence.

These values are of critical importance in a world bitterly divided and endangered by religious fundamentalisms, and a planet  threatened by reckless disregard for our impacts on nature.

In the face of these unprecedented challenges we feel the need to present a unified front, in order to provide wider information about these beliefs and their benefits, to form local groups to explore and embody these beliefs, to sponsor advocacy and to provide services and initiatives related to these beliefs.

We share these fundamental principles:

Reverence:   Nature and the wider Universe are the focus of our deepest feelings of awe, wonder and curiosity.

Concern:       We respect and care for the rights of all humans and other living beings, and strive to treat all living beings with compassion and concern. We aim to live sustainably in harmony with nature.

Celebration: We celebrate our lives in our bodies on this beautiful earth as a joy and a privilege, not as a passage to an imaginary afterlife.

Immanence: While we do not believe in personal immortality, we know that our presences will persist through the ripples that our actions leave, the natural recycling of our elements, and the memories of living people.

Naturalism:  Everything that exists is an integral part of Nature, including what is not yet understood. There are no supernatural realms, beings or forces.

Scientific method: The scientific method is our best way of continually improving our understanding of nature and the Universe.

Realism: The external world exists independently of our consciousness or perception.

Cognitive openness: We should always be open to modify our theories and strategies in the light of evidence and experience.

Religious freedom: We support freedom of religion and complete separation of state and religion.

We are convinced that these principles can provide the emotional satisfactions of traditional religions without the usual social, environmental and intellectual costs. They offer a framework for spirituality that is in harmony with the needs of world peace, human survival and planetary health, as well as with the findings of science.

We recognize that this standpoint is currently described by several different names. These include scientific or natural pantheism, spiritual or religious humanism, spiritual or religious naturalism, spiritual or religious atheism, naturalistic or secular paganism, deep ecology, Gaia religion, philosophical Taoism, and many other individual variants.

The names and vocabulary vary for two major reasons: one because we vary in our levels of comfort in using the language of traditional religions and philosophies, the other because the absence of a common name has opened the field for many alternatives.

We recognize our shared outlook and our desire to come together for discussion, celebration, community and action. We honor our diversity within  commonality, and our different and changing preferences of terms and celebrations.  We recognize that only through unity can people of this persuasion gain a profile and make an impact.

Organizations embodying religious naturalism
The World Pantheist Movement was the first and remains the largest membership organization for religious naturalists. It is the natural home for religious naturalists in the sense covered on this page.
Historically the WPM chose to use the word pantheism in order to underline the continuity with 2500 years of thinkers from Heraclitus and Chuang Zi through John Toland, to Einstein and Hawking.
However the WPM welcomes all Religious Humanists, Scientific Pantheists,  Religious Naturalists, Religious Atheists, Pans, Naturalistic Pagans, Deep Ecologists. We have no interest in favoring one or other of these terms and we are content to let evolution decide which variant is most widely used. We officially use a naturalistic vocabulary that is most widely acceptable to members, which means avoiding certain words such as God, divine, religion, church, prayer, holy and so on.  We believe that what matters is not the name but the beliefs and values. We foster complete individual freedom of vocabulary and celebration, while recognising the benefits of
a unified front to:
  • provide wider information about these beliefs and their benefits
  • form local groups to explore and embody these beliefs
  • sponsor advocacy and action on religious freedom, human rights and environment
  • provide services and initiatives related to these beliefs
